Finding a job can often feel like navigating through a maze. Sometimes, we come across friends, colleagues, or peers getting that elusive job while we are still struggling. Maybe the guys who get that elusive job are better, or maybe they are following a better process, getting more interview calls, and having increased chances of success. Drawing from my experience as both a former job seeker and current recruiter, here are some refined strategies to guide you.
-
Continuous Preparation: I have said it before and am saying it again – Don’t start looking for a job when you are on the verge of quitting. More often than not, you will end up choosing something in desperation that may not be to your liking, and very quickly you will again find yourself in the job market. Keep your resume updated and continually refine it. Your resume is more than just a document; it evolves through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, industry events, and other networking events.
-
Strategic Intent: Avoid jumping ship just because colleagues are leaving or simply because you’ve been with your organization for a long time. Approach job changes as a strategic career move rather than a mere transition.
-
Social Judgement: Active participation on LinkedIn is as crucial as your presence on other social media platforms. Sharing your insights, achievements, and positive experiences regularly. Engage thoughtfully with others posts, always maintain a respectful tone, even if you have different views.
-
Network Mastery: Have a two pronged strategy for job hunting:
Push Strategy:
-
Seek out genuine recruitment firms that are willing to discuss your career. Try to develop a relationship with the consultants.
-
Go through job portals like Monster, Naukri, etc. and look for recruiters who are focused on your industry, and then approach them separately. Many times, recruiters do not advertise positions or can position you in some company where they feel your expertise will be acknowledged.
Pull Strategy:
As mentioned above, be positively active on social media and at industry events, and simultaneously try to connect with people in your industry. Be genuinely supportive of people and help them with information and guidance. Keep yourself updated about the latest news and information, and you never know when someone relevant will call you for an interview.
4. Direct Approach: If you spot a job opening that piques your interest, don’t just submit an online application. Research the company and reach out directly to the HR manager via LinkedIn or phone. This personal touch can significantly differentiate you from other applicants.
-
Beware of scams: Avoid recruiters or websites that demand upfront fees for job placements. Legitimate recruiters are paid by employers, not by job seekers. Stay vigilant and steer clear of any suspicious offers.
-
Project-like Approch: Approach your job search as you would a project: Set clear goals, devise a strategy and execute it diligently. With consistent effort and a structured approach, you increase your chances of landing a job that aligns with your career aspirations.
In conclusion, navigating the job market requires persistence, strategic thinking and a proactive mindset. By treating your job search as a well-planned project, you can steer yourself towards fulfilling career opportunities.
Happy job hunting guys!!!! ☺
